This mid-seventeenth century oil, showing the boyhood Louis XIV, closely relates to a series of cartoons executed by Jacob Jordaens in around 1645, entitled The Riding School. The tapestries that were subsequently made from these now hang in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
